William J. Canfield papers, 1965-1999.

This collection was assembled by William J. Canfield. It documents Boston-area homophile groups, such as the Homophile Union of Boston and Student Homophile League, as well as other organizations serving gay men and lesbians in the Boston area, from the mid-1960s to late 1980s. It also contains scattered gay publications, including Esplanade, Fag Rag, and the Gay Community News. In addition, the collection includes planning documentation for the 1990 Gay Liberation Reunion and the 1999 Boston Gay Reunion. There is also a small amount of material concerning gay organizations from around the country. Five rolls of microfilm contain selections from the second Boston Gay Archives, and include materials collected by William J. Canfield, John C. Graves, John Mitzell, Craig Thiersch, and Stan Tillotson.

William J. Canfield was a gay activist in Boston. He was president of the Homophile Union of Boston in 1971-1972, and business manager of the Gay Community News in 1973-1974. He also organized two reunions in 1990 and 1999 for gay activists involved in the Boston gay liberation movement in the 1970s. In addition, William J.
